Overview01

What is 3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene?

3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene, also known as 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene, is a colourless to pale yellow crystalline solid built on a benzene ring carrying chlorine atoms at C-1 and C-2 and a nitro group at C-4.

That arrangement makes the molecule a versatile nitro intermediate. The nitro group is readily reduced to the corresponding aniline, opening the route to diazotisation and azo coupling chemistry, while the two chlorines are retained through to the diazo component used in dye and pigment manufacture.

At Chelora Dyes, 3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene is crystallised and dried to a controlled particle profile and low moisture, so reduction and substitution reactions downstream run cleanly and give consistent, reproducible results batch to batch.

Handling06

Storage and guidelines

  • Store in tightly sealed original packaging in a dry environment.
  • Keep below 30°C, in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
  • Segregate strictly from strong oxidising agents and strong bases.
  • Protect from moisture pickup and avoid contact with incompatible metals.
  • Use compatible containers: lined HDPE bags or drums.
  • Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve assay specification.

Handling precautions

3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene is combustible and can react vigorously with oxidising materials; contact and inhalation of dust should be strictly avoided.

Use closed handling equipment, dust and vapour extraction, and full PPE including chemically resistant gloves, goggles and, where indicated by the risk assessment, respiratory protection during weighing, charging and any bulk handling operation.

Keep away from strong oxidisers, strong bases and sources of ignition.

Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet for exposure limits, spill containment, disposal, and first-aid measures before use.

Frequently asked questions

What is 3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene used for?

3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene is used as a nitro intermediate in dye and agrochemical manufacture. Reduction of the nitro group gives 3,4-dichloroaniline, a widely used diazo component, and the compound is also used directly in further nitroaromatic synthesis.

How is the nitro group on this molecule used downstream?

The nitro group is readily reduced under standard catalytic or chemical reduction conditions to the corresponding aniline, which is the entry point into diazotisation and azo dye coupling chemistry.

Is 3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene soluble in water?

It is essentially insoluble in water. It dissolves in common organic solvents, so reduction and further substitution reactions are typically carried out in an organic or mixed solvent system.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 97%, with moisture and melting range held within tight limits. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order.

What packaging sizes are available?

25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags, with bulk supply available in 500 kg and 1000 kg jumbo bags.

How should it be stored, and for how long?

In sealed original packaging, below 30°C, in a dry, ventilated store away from strong oxidising agents and strong bases. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.

Is it hazardous to handle?

It is combustible and can react vigorously with oxidising materials, and must be handled strictly according to its Safety Data Sheet, with closed handling, dedicated PPE and adequate ventilation.

Do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?

Yes. Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, moisture, appearance and melting point.
