Meta Dinitrobenzene
A doubly nitrated benzene ring supplied as a reduction feedstock and nitro intermediate for dye, pigment and specialty chemical manufacture.
What is Meta Dinitrobenzene?
Meta Dinitrobenzene is a pale yellow crystalline solid carrying two nitro groups in the 1,3 (meta) relationship on a benzene ring.
The symmetrical placement of the two nitro groups gives the molecule predictable, well-characterised reduction chemistry: partial or full reduction of the nitro groups opens the route to meta-nitroaniline and meta-phenylenediamine, both of which are used further upstream in dye, pigment and specialty chemical synthesis.
At Chelora Dyes, Meta Dinitrobenzene is crystallised and dried to a controlled particle profile and low moisture, so downstream reduction and coupling chemistry runs cleanly and gives consistent, reproducible results batch to batch.

Storage and guidelines
- Store in tightly sealed original packaging in a dry environment.
- Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Segregate strictly from reducing agents, strong bases and combustible materials.
- Protect from moisture pickup and avoid contact with incompatible metals.
- Use compatible containers: lined HDPE bags or drums.
- Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve assay specification.
Handling precautions
Meta Dinitrobenzene is classified as toxic and is a possible environmental hazard; contact, ingestion and inhalation should be strictly avoided.
Use closed handling equipment, dust and vapour extraction, and full PPE including chemically resistant gloves, goggles and, where indicated by the risk assessment, respiratory protection during weighing, charging and any bulk handling operation.
Keep away from reducing agents, strong bases and sources of ignition.
Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet for exposure limits, spill containment, disposal, and first-aid measures before use.
Frequently asked questions
What is Meta Dinitrobenzene used for?
Meta Dinitrobenzene is used chiefly as a nitro intermediate that is reduced to meta-nitroaniline or meta-phenylenediamine for further dye, pigment and specialty chemical synthesis.
Why is the meta (1,3) substitution pattern significant?
The symmetrical 1,3 placement of the two nitro groups gives predictable, well-characterised reduction behaviour, which supports consistent, reproducible downstream chemistry.
Is Meta Dinitrobenzene soluble in water?
It has low water solubility and is more soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol, ether and benzene.
What purity do you supply?
Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99%, with moisture and melting range held within tight limits. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order.
What packaging sizes are available?
25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags, with bulk supply available in 500 kg and 1000 kg jumbo bags.
How should it be stored, and for how long?
In sealed original packaging in a cool, dry, ventilated store away from reducing agents and strong bases. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.
Is it hazardous to handle?
It is classified as toxic and a suspected environmental hazard and must be handled strictly according to its Safety Data Sheet, with closed handling, dedicated PPE and adequate ventilation.
Do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, moisture, appearance and melting point.
