What is Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline?

PCONA, formally 4-chloro-2-nitroaniline, is an orange to yellow-orange crystalline powder carrying an amino group at C-1, a nitro group on the neighbouring carbon and a chlorine directly opposite the amine.

Both substituents pull electron density away from the ring, and that is exactly what makes the molecule useful. The diazonium salt formed from the amine is unusually stable and holds up through a long coupling campaign, while the coupled product sits firmly in the orange to scarlet band. The classic route pairs it with beta-naphthol to build the chlorinated para red pigment family.

Storage and guidelines

  • Store in tightly sealed original packaging in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store.
  • Keep away from heat, direct sunlight and ignition sources.
  • Protect from moisture pickup — the powder can cake if exposed to humid air.
  • Segregate from strong oxidising agents, reducing agents and strong bases.
  • Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve moisture and assay specification.
  • Contain spillage and keep it out of drains and surface water.

Handling precautions

Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline is harmful by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact, and as a nitroaromatic amine it can cause methaemoglobinaemia on repeated or uncontrolled exposure.

It is also toxic to aquatic organisms, so spillage must be contained rather than washed away.

Control dust at weighing, charging and any bulk handling point. Use chemically resistant gloves, eye protection and protective clothing, with local exhaust ventilation where dust may be generated.

What is Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline used for?

It is diazotized and coupled as a diazo component for orange and red azo pigments and azoic dyes. The classic route couples it with beta-naphthol to give the chlorinated para red pigment family used in printing inks, coatings and plastics.

Why does it give such stable diazonium salts?

The nitro group ortho to the amine and the chlorine para to it both withdraw electron density from the ring. That makes the diazonium salt formed from the amine noticeably more stable than one made from aniline, which is why the intermediate holds up well through a coupling campaign.

How does it differ from para nitroaniline?

Both are nitroanilines used as diazo components, but this grade carries an additional chlorine and has the nitro group ortho rather than para to the amine. The result sits in the orange to scarlet band with lower solubility and better fastness, while para nitroaniline gives the bluer para red.

Is it soluble in water?

No. It is practically insoluble in water and soluble in alcohol, acetone and benzene. It is taken into solution in dilute mineral acid for diazotization.

What purity do you supply?

Standard grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99%, with moisture and insoluble matter held within tight limits and the melting range controlled. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order for shade-sensitive pigment work.

What packaging sizes are available?

25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags and fibre drums, with bulk supply available in 500 kg jumbo bags.

How should it be stored, and for how long?

In sealed original packaging in a cool, dry, ventilated store away from heat, strong oxidisers and reducing agents. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.
