Overview01

What is 3,4-Dichloroaniline?

3,4-Dichloroaniline, abbreviated 34DCA, is a light tan to brownish crystalline solid built on an aniline ring carrying an amino group at C-1 and two adjacent chlorine atoms at the C-3 and C-4 positions.

The amino group is diazotized to form a diazonium salt, and the two adjacent chlorine substituents raise the lipophilicity and stabilise the finished azo chromophore once it is coupled to a partner component — giving good solvent and migration fastness in the finished dye. The same free amine, without diazotization, is also a widely used precursor in phenylurea and anilide agrochemical synthesis.

At Chelora Dyes, 34DCA is crystallised and dried to a controlled particle profile and low moisture, so diazotization reactions and agrochemical condensation chemistry downstream run cleanly and give a consistent, reproducible product batch to batch.

Handling06

Storage and guidelines

  • Store in tightly sealed original packaging in a dry, dark environment.
  • Keep in a cool, well-ventilated area, ideally in a dedicated store.
  • Protect from moisture pickup and prolonged light exposure.
  • Segregate from strong oxidising agents.
  • Use compatible containers: lined HDPE bags or drums, clearly labelled.
  • Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve assay specification.

Handling precautions

3,4-Dichloroaniline is harmful if swallowed and is toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects; it is regarded as a suspected carcinogen in some regulatory frameworks.

Use dust control measures, chemically resistant gloves, and eye protection during weighing, charging, and any bulk handling operation.

Provide local exhaust ventilation where dust generation is likely, and avoid release to drains or watercourses given its aquatic toxicity classification.

Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet and applicable local regulations for exposure limits, monitoring requirements, spill containment, disposal, and first-aid measures before any handling operation.

Frequently asked questions

What is 3,4-Dichloroaniline used for?

3,4-Dichloroaniline is diazotized and used as a diazo component in azo dye synthesis, and is also a key intermediate in the manufacture of certain phenylurea and anilide-based agrochemicals.

Why does the 3,4-dichloro substitution pattern matter?

The two adjacent chlorine atoms meta and para to the amino group increase the molecule's lipophilicity and stabilise the diazonium salt formed on diazotization, giving azo dyes with good fastness, and it is this same substitution pattern that makes the free amine a valued agrochemical building block.

Is 3,4-Dichloroaniline soluble in water?

It has limited solubility in water. It is more soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, benzene and dilute acids, and diazotization is normally carried out under acidic aqueous conditions with fine suspension.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 98%, with moisture and melting range held within tight limits. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order for sensitive applications.

What packaging sizes are available?

25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags, with bulk supply available in 500 kg and 1000 kg jumbo bags.

How should it be stored, and for how long?

In sealed original packaging in a cool, dry, ventilated store away from strong oxidisers and light. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.

Is it hazardous to handle?

3,4-Dichloroaniline is classified as harmful if swallowed and toxic to aquatic life, and is regarded as a suspected carcinogen in some regulatory frameworks, so it should be handled with dedicated PPE, dust control and adequate ventilation. Review the Safety Data Sheet and local regulatory requirements before any handling operation.

Do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?

Yes. Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, moisture, melting range and appearance.
