Overview01

What is Fast Bordeaux (GP Base)?

Fast Bordeaux GP Base, formally 4-methoxy-2-nitroaniline, is an orange-red to red crystalline powder built on an aniline ring carrying an amino group at C-1, a nitro group at C-2, and a methoxy group at C-4.

As an azoic base, the amino group is diazotized and the resulting diazonium salt is coupled directly onto fabric or substrate that has been impregnated with a naphthol coupling component (Naphthol AS-type chemistry). The nitro and methoxy groups together define the bordeaux-to-maroon shade family this base is known for, along with good wash and light fastness.

At Chelora Dyes, Fast Bordeaux GP Base is crystallised and dried to a controlled particle profile and low moisture, so diazotization runs cleanly and gives a consistent, reproducible shade batch to batch.

Handling06

Storage and guidelines

  • Store in tightly sealed original packaging in a dry, dark environment.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Protect from moisture pickup — the powder can cake if exposed to humid air.
  • Segregate from strong oxidising agents, reducing agents and combustible materials.
  • Use compatible containers: lined HDPE bags or drums.
  • Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve moisture and assay specification.

Handling precautions

Fast Bordeaux GP Base is a fine crystalline powder that can cause irritation to skin and eyes, and is harmful if swallowed or inhaled.

Use dust control measures, chemically resistant gloves, and eye protection during weighing, charging, and any bulk handling operation.

Provide local exhaust ventilation where dust generation is likely, and avoid breathing dust. Keep away from open flame and sources of ignition during diazotization.

Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet for exposure limits, spill containment, disposal, and first-aid measures before use.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fast Bordeaux GP Base used for?

Fast Bordeaux GP Base is diazotized and coupled with a naphthol component to produce bordeaux and maroon azoic shades used in cotton dyeing, pigment manufacture and printing applications.

Why does the methoxy-nitro substitution pattern matter?

The nitro group withdraws electron density and stabilises the diazonium salt formed on diazotization, while the methoxy group is electron-donating and shifts the resulting azo chromophore toward the deep bordeaux and maroon shade range once coupled.

Is Fast Bordeaux GP Base soluble in water?

It is only sparingly soluble in water. It is more soluble in organic solvents such as acetone and hot alcohol, and diazotization is normally carried out as a fine acidic suspension, as is standard for azoic bases.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 98%, with moisture and melting range held within tight limits. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order for sensitive dyeing applications.

What packaging sizes are available?

25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags, with bulk supply available in 500 kg and 1000 kg jumbo bags.

How should it be stored, and for how long?

In sealed original packaging in a cool, dry, ventilated store away from strong oxidisers and direct light. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.

Is it hazardous to handle?

It is harmful if swallowed or inhaled and can cause skin and eye irritation, so it should be handled with PPE, dust control and adequate ventilation. Review the Safety Data Sheet before any handling operation.

Do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?

Yes. Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, moisture, melting range and appearance.
