Meta Phenylenediamine
A symmetrically diaminated benzene supplied as a diazo and coupling component for azo dye manufacture, and as a curing agent in polymer chemistry.
What is Meta Phenylenediamine?
Meta Phenylenediamine is a crystalline solid built on a benzene ring carrying two primary amine groups in the 1,3 (meta) relationship.
The two amine groups give the molecule dual reactivity: one amine can be diazotised while the ring itself is highly activated toward electrophilic coupling, making the compound valuable both as a diazo component and as a coupling component in azo dye synthesis. The same reactivity is also exploited in polymer chemistry as a curing agent and monomer building block.
At Chelora Dyes, Meta Phenylenediamine is crystallised and dried to a controlled particle profile and low moisture, so diazotisation, coupling and curing reactions downstream run cleanly and give consistent, reproducible results batch to batch.

Storage and guidelines
- Store in tightly sealed original packaging, protected from light.
- Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Segregate strictly from strong oxidising agents.
- Protect from moisture and air exposure, which promote discolouration.
- Use compatible containers: lined HDPE bags or drums.
- Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve assay specification and colour.
Handling precautions
Meta Phenylenediamine is classified as a sensitiser and suspected environmental hazard; skin and eye contact and inhalation should be strictly avoided.
Use closed handling equipment, dust extraction, and full PPE including chemically resistant gloves, goggles and, where indicated by the risk assessment, respiratory protection during weighing, charging and any bulk handling operation.
Keep away from strong oxidisers and sources of ignition.
Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet for exposure limits, spill containment, disposal, and first-aid measures before use.
Frequently asked questions
What is Meta Phenylenediamine used for?
Meta Phenylenediamine is used chiefly as a diazo and coupling component in azo dye manufacture, and as a curing agent and monomer in polymer and hair dye chemistry.
Why is this diamine useful as a coupling component?
The two amine groups in the meta relationship give a ring that is both diazotisable at one amine and strongly activated toward coupling, supporting versatile, reproducible azo dye synthesis.
Is Meta Phenylenediamine soluble in water?
Yes, it is soluble in both water and alcohol, which supports its use in aqueous dye and hair-colourant formulations.
What purity do you supply?
Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 98%, with moisture and melting range held within tight limits. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order.
What packaging sizes are available?
25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags, with bulk supply available in 500 kg and 1000 kg jumbo bags.
How should it be stored, and for how long?
In sealed original packaging, protected from light, in a cool, dry, ventilated store away from strong oxidisers. Shelf life is 18 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.
Is it hazardous to handle?
It is classified as a sensitiser and suspected environmental hazard and must be handled strictly according to its Safety Data Sheet, with closed handling, dedicated PPE and adequate ventilation.
Do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, moisture, appearance and melting point.
