What is 2,4-Dinitroaniline?

2,4-Dinitroaniline, abbreviated 24DNA, is a yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder built on an aniline ring carrying an amino group at C-1 and two nitro groups at the C-2 and C-4 positions.

That arrangement is the reason the molecule is valuable. The amino group is diazotized to form a diazonium salt, and the two electron-withdrawing nitro groups stabilise that salt while pulling the resulting azo chromophore toward deeper, more bathochromic shades once it is coupled to a partner component — giving pigments and dyes their characteristic depth of shade and lightfastness.
