Overview01

What is 3,4-Dichloroaniline?

3,4-Dichloroaniline is a beige to brown crystalline solid built on a benzene ring carrying a primary amine at C-1 and chlorine atoms at the adjacent C-3 and C-4 positions.

That combination is the reason the molecule is such a widely used diazo component. The amine diazotises cleanly under standard acidic conditions, and the two chlorines moderate the ring's electron density, giving a diazonium salt with the coupling behaviour needed to build the azo chromophores that anchor many dye and pigment structures.

At Chelora Dyes, 3,4-Dichloroaniline is crystallised and dried to a controlled particle profile and low moisture, so diazotisation and coupling reactions downstream run cleanly and give consistent, reproducible results batch to batch.

Handling06

Storage and guidelines

  • Store in tightly sealed original packaging, protected from light.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Segregate strictly from strong oxidising agents, acids and acid chlorides.
  • Protect from moisture pickup, as the material darkens on prolonged storage.
  • Use compatible containers: lined HDPE bags or drums.
  • Re-seal bags promptly after use to preserve assay specification.

Handling precautions

3,4-Dichloroaniline is classified as toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed, and can cause serious eye damage; contact should be strictly avoided.

Use closed handling equipment, dust and vapour extraction, and full PPE including chemically resistant gloves, goggles and, where indicated by the risk assessment, respiratory protection during weighing, charging and any bulk handling operation.

Keep away from strong oxidisers, acids, acid chlorides and acid anhydrides.

Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet for exposure limits, spill containment, disposal, and first-aid measures before use.

Frequently asked questions

What is 3,4-Dichloroaniline used for?

3,4-Dichloroaniline is used as a diazo component in dye and pigment manufacture, where the amine is diazotised and coupled to build azo chromophores. It is also a key intermediate in the production of certain agrochemical actives.

Why is the amine on this aniline useful for diazotisation?

The two chlorine substituents moderate the electron density of the ring, giving a primary amine that diazotises predictably under standard acidic conditions to form a diazonium salt suited to azo coupling.

Is 3,4-Dichloroaniline soluble in water?

It is only slightly soluble in water. It is more soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and alcohol, so diazotisation and coupling reactions are generally run in an acidic aqueous system with the amine dispersed or partially dissolved.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 98%, with moisture and melting range held within tight limits. Higher assay grades can be manufactured to order.

What packaging sizes are available?

25 kg and 50 kg multiwall paper or HDPE-lined bags, with bulk supply available in 500 kg and 1000 kg jumbo bags.

How should it be stored, and for how long?

In sealed original packaging in a cool, dark, dry store away from strong oxidising agents, acids and acid chlorides. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture when storage conditions are maintained.

Is it hazardous to handle?

It is classified as toxic and corrosive to eyes, with aquatic toxicity, and must be handled strictly according to its Safety Data Sheet, with closed handling, dedicated PPE and adequate ventilation.

Do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?

Yes. Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, moisture, appearance and melting point.
